Creating jewelry is a bit like architecture. When I create a new piece, I usually create a grouping of pieces that I want to work with. Then I start to build around those pieces. I rarely do isometrical necklaces unless I am using an odd piece that is irregular in shape and size. In that instance, it would probably help to 'balance' the center piece. But more than likely, I prefer to 'build' a piece. I use different shapes, sizes and pieces on either side of the center stone to create an imbalance and then use different sized silver and crystals to bring the necklace back into balance. It can be a bit challenging at times and I have taken things apart over and over again and lifted it to see and feel where the neckpiece might be out of balance. I am not sure why I started doing this but I think it is because I have a love for the 'unexpected' or 'unusual' in classic designs. I mean it looks symmetrical but when you look closer, you realize, its not the same - yet it works.
